Fallout 3/New Vegas vs Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

All over the internet I have seen people arguing and debating over which game is better: Fallout 3/New Vegas or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Both games are awesome and they both have been critically acclaimed by the RPG crowd and gamers everywhere... but of course there's always fan wars *shaking my head*

Fanboys: the cancer that's killing video games... just play the damn games already, they're all good! I don't want to rant about fanboys right now, actually I feel like talking about video games and that's why I made this post. I want to hear your opinion on which game is better...

Fallout 3/New Vegas (same exact game in my opinion) with it's awesome graphics, great story, and it's mood of solitude
 OR...

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with it's beautiful scenery, awesome guilds and side quests, and it's surreal, breathing world
So tell me what you guys think in the comments below and if you haven't played these games then I suggest going out and buying them because you are missing out on two of the greatest western RPGs of all time!

  1. I played both of these games on the PS3. I got Fallout 3 on its release date and played it as nonstop as I could until I beat it. I've been a huge fan of the Fallout franchise since Fallout 1 on the PC. I loved the storyline and the setting of this chapter of the series. It was not the same kind of open world that an Elder Scrolls game is, so you had an idea of what you actually needed to do advance the storyline.

Oblivion is so open that it can be intimidating in a sense. I have never actually finished the main storyline of any of the Elder Scrolls games, and I think I've played all of the console versions since ES3. The leveling system is unique, but I find it to be somewhat tedious as well. If you're trying to max a char, you have to literally plan out exactly how you're going to do it. I actually wrote an Oblivion character planner as one of my first real software projects. I spent more time worrying about my leveling than playing the game itself. Eventually I got bored and stopped playing it. I probably should have just played the game and ignored powerleveling, but I can't really do that. The way that NPCs' power equal your level means that you need to maximize your level gains as much as possible.

I found the combat system to be aggravating as well. Guess I prefer turn-based RPG battle systems personally. It was hard for me to aim distanced magic, and that got my goat.

That's a lot of words to say that I prefer Fallout 3, but Elder Scrolls is fun to play also. Just don't be a perfectionist in Elder Scrolls and you'll have more fun with it.

  4. I actually like both games. I like Fallout because the whole nuclear holocaust setting, and I enjoy using guns and hi tech.

Oblivion I liked as well because of the vast world of exploring. But like Ben said, the worrying about leveling up was a bitch. I think I went through like 3 different characters until I got one I was comfortable with. Also I liked shooting arrows in Oblivion, it's so much fun.

    Just my 2 copper coins.

  5. It is just too hard to compare for me, really. Both games are a huge part of my life, (and I have life) was playing them at least 3 times both.
All I can say is: both-
    -open world
    -rpgs
    -similar in conversations, character/enviroment interactment
thast all they have in common and that is the main thing I love about them. Rest U can divide by sword/guns, epic middle ages flora/ epic post nuclear fauna.

  9. Personally i like fallout better. the combat mechanics in ES is good, but doesn't outweigh the grandness of fallout

if it had the mechanics of say Demonsouls, then it would be a different story :P

  16. Personally I love both games though I've never completed Fallout for one simple reason.....I got bored. I'm not saying that the game is boring but that's just the type of gamer I am, ES3 actually took me a FULL YEAR just to take the game seriously enough to play through it and I was inmediately in love(game cost me only $15 dollars and was the greatest investment I've ever made) but each game is amazing in its own right. The reason I love Oblivion more is for just one thing and that is the books, I can literrally sit and read books without playing the game at all because it is so rich in content....anyways both are great and if you can then play them both rather than choose between the two. Definitely following@ x3

  20. these are both great games but in my opinion oblivion was better.

  21. I loved Oblivion with the burning passion of a thousand suns. However, I like Fallout 3 and New Vegas better. The thing that finally killed my will to finish Oblivion is that the mobs level with you. Eventually there was no reason to get Level 18 magic missile because the wild bears were going to be right there with me.

  23. I liked Fallout more than Oblivion. Oblivion was ... "random", nothing seemed to work for me there.

  24. Fallout three was the best game I have ever played. I even got The Last, Best Hope for Humanity :D

  25. I've played fallout New Vegas and it was pretty impressive. Haven't tried Oblivion yet but I have some friends who are Oblivion crazed and attempt to influence me to try it. I may someday..

  27. ah videos games....I don't enjoy them as much as I used to.

  28. lol @ the empty part of the diagram.

  29. After playing both, I have to say I vastly prefer Oblivion over Fallout 3 or New Vegas. They're just totally different settings, and the latter two just feel more desolate and empty. Yes, obviously this is a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but it just wasn't as fun for me as Oblivion was.

  30. I've played both, and both are excellent games in their own entity.

  31. I like both. I havent played fallout enough because i was stolen from my house. I have played oblivion to exhaustion and I think its tie.

  32. Loved em both.
Of course, you do have to get past the bugs, the clipping, and some of the silliness.

For what it's worth, Fallout was a lot less monotonous than its fantasy counterpart.

  33. oblivion is just so much better than fallout. oblivion just has a better feel for the game. i didnt like the whole VATS thing in fallout, i think it ruined the game for me. i understood the whole "everything is broken and dead" thing, but searching constantly for a gun that actually works just got annoying.

  34. "Empty"

I have to admit, I laughed a bit.

  43. fallout, but both are good

  44. Comparing the two are like comparing apples and oranges, both are rpgs, but one's fantasy w/ swords and bows and the other is a wasteland with guns.
